High Heels

The "High Heels" is a performance about dance as a profession and dancers as the persons who are primarily struggling against limitations and obstacles, as well as trying to give the best performance each time. The dancers can rely only on themselves, their talents and skills, with all their weaknesses, while being bereaved of everything that would help them to create the world of stage illusion. They have no beautiful and glamorous costumes, parcels, colettes, points or ballet shoes. We are observing the dancers not in their roles of a prince in love or a princess in distress, but rather as those who dance because they want to, and dance because they need to express themselves. They are talking about themselves, complain about others, and struggle with their private lives entangled with their careers. Just like in the artists' everyday life.

Both the persons I work with and the new environment determine each of my projects to a large extent. It is the most important to me not to tell the artists any roles invented by me, because each of them has his or her own personality. That conduct, I think, makes my performances sincere and real. It is the dancers who are observed and evaluated. They present their visions to the director, and conduct their dialogues with the audience. For that reason, I try to provoke my dancers to talk from the very beginning.

The "High Heels" performance is the result of an exceptional confrontation between myself and my dancers. The differen- ces in our habits and work methods become starting points for the development of movement and content. A personal performance has been created in which the dancers are testing themselves, observing carefully and setting require- ments. That is a performance of a group work and reliance exclusively on oneself, of the difficulties of ascending to the selected goal. An attempt to walk on high heels.
